MAJ Josh Howell

 

Major Josh Howell is the Army National Guard (ARNG) Deputy Assistant Commandant for the United States Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School (USACBRNS) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He ensures the ARNG perspectives are fully integrated into the development of emerging doctrine, leader development and force structure impacting the manning, equipping, training, readiness, mobilization and deployability of ARNG CBRN Units and Soldiers (primary focus on Soldiers). Additionally, he provides the Chief of CBRN timely and accurate perspectives on personnel, equipment, training and deployment issues that pertain to the ARNG CBRN Community.

 

Major Howell enlisted in the Louisiana Army National Guard in December 2000 serving as an Engineer Heavy Equipment Operator. After IET/AIT, he completed the necessary hours for his bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Louisiana TECH. Immediately upon graduation, in November of 2002, his unit was mobilized for a deployment to Bagram AB, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. 

 

Upon returning home from his deployment, MAJ Howell went OCS through the ARNG State Officer program, commissioning in September of 2004. After commissioning, his first assignment was Platoon Leader, B CO, 527th EN BN, 225th EN BDE, Ruston, LA. He also served as a Platoon Leader in the 1022nd Vertical EN CO, also of the 527th EN BN. In August 2007, he took the XO position of the 1020th Vertical EN CO in Marksville, LA with subsequent company command of the 1020th in July of 2008.

 

In August of 2009, MAJ Howell entered the Title 10 AGR program. His first T10 AGR duty assignment was to the 120th IN BDE, Fort Hood, TX, serving in the 1-395TH EN Training Support Battalion as a Mob station training Operations officer and OCT. In August of 2012, he then moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, assigned to the Counter Explosive Hazards Center as a CIED MOB and Training Officer. From June 2014 to July 2015, MAJ Howell attended Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. From July 2015 to June 2018, MAJ Howell served in the MOB and Readiness branch in the G3 at NGB, Arlington, VA, as the sourcing officer for National Guard Divisions, BDE/BCTs, EN, CHEM and various other Guard units, supporting Global Force Management requirements. MAJ Howell completed his Master’s Degree from Webster University in Environmental Management in March of 2016. June 2018 through July 2020, MAJ Howell served as an Operations officer for Operations Group Charlie, MCTP at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Upon completion of Chemical CBRN RC CCC, August 2020 brought MAJ Howell to his current position as DAC-NG at FLW, MO.

 

Major Howell’s awards and decorations include 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Army Commendation Medals, 1 Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, 1 National Defense Service Medal, 1 Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/CS, 1 Humanitarian Service Medal, 1 Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M, 1 Army Service Ribbon, 1 Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, 1 Meritorious Unit Ribbon and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

 

Major Howell currently lives in Saint Robert, MO with his wife Debra.
