MSG Huy Nguyen

 

MSG Huy Nguyen was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States in 1989 where he was raised in Springfield, Virginia. He enlisted in the Army in August of 2007. He attended Basic Combat training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he was awarded the MOS 74D, CBRN Specialist.

 

MSG Nguyen started his career in the 101st Chemical Company, Fort Liberty (then Bragg), NC, as a member of the Smoke & Decon platoon. During his time in the dual-purpose platoon, he served as a M56 Coyote smoke generator vehicle driver/operator providing field obscuration and assigned to various positions for decontamination support. His second assignment was with 125th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, TX, where he served as the Company’s CBRN Specialist and Orderly room NCOIC.

 

MSG Nguyen served his first OCONUS assignment in HHC, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, Grafenwoehr, Germany, where he deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 2011-2012. He volunteered for an airborne assignment and was sent to Basic Airborne Course (BAC) at Fort Moore (then Benning), GA.

 

Upon completion of jump school, MSG Nguyen was assigned as a paratrooper to 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment (ABN), 3rd Brigade Combat Team (ABN), 82nd Airborne Division where he deployed to Iraq in response to threats by the Islamic State (IS) in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR). MSG Nguyen served at various leadership and staff positions within the division at the company, squadron, and ultimately as the Brigade CBRN Staff NCO.

 

MSG Nguyen served as a mounted reconnaissance vehicle (NBCRV) Platoon Sergeant in the 62nd CBRN Company, 23rd CBRNE Battalion, Camp Humphreys, Korea. After his Korea tour, he returned for his third tour at Fort Liberty serving in the 14th Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment (CRD), 3rd Special Forces Group (ABN) as a Chemical Detachment Alpha (CDA) Team Leader.

 

MSG Nguyen was chosen to serve as a First Sergeant for the 21st CBRN Company on Fort Liberty, NC. During his tenure, he deployed with the unit to Qatar as part of a joint-service task force in support of a mass casualty response force. He also oversaw the unit during their Defense CBRN Response Force (DCRF) and Immediate Reaction Force (IRF) missions. He was later assigned to 1st Special Forces Command as an Operations CBRN NCO.

 

He has been selected to attend the Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) class 75.

 

MSG Nguyen holds an associate degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and is working towards his bachelor’s in Management Studies.
