COL_Knapp_Laura_photo.pngRetired Col. Laura L. Knapp graduated from the United States Military Academy and commissioned as a Military Intelligence officer in 1994.

Knapp served as a tactical intelligence officer and platoon leader during assignments with the 2nd Infantry Division and 1st Cavalry Division as a lieutenant. She later served as assistant Brigade S-2 for the 2nd Infantry Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Strike) and as commander of D Company, 311th Military Intelligence Battalion.

She assumed command in Operation Enduring Freedom I (Afghanistan) and deployed the company again for Operation Iraqi Freedom I. Following company command, she served as the U.S. Army Intelligence Center Assistant Capability Manager for Ground Sensors, then became the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion Operations Officer in 2005. Upon graduating Air Command and Staff College, she transitioned to the 743rd Military Intelligence Battalion in Aurora, Colorado, serving as the NSA Colorado Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer. In 2010, Knapp reported to the XVIII Airborne Corps, serving as the Corps Analysis and Control Element (ACE) Chief and the XVIII Airborne Corps Commander’s Initiative Group Chief.

Knapp commanded the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, training the Army’s counterintelligence agents and human intelligence collectors.

Following command, she completed the Army War College National Security Agency / Cyber Command Fellowship. Her thesis work was piloted by U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, later becoming a programmed, enduring capability. Knapp then served as the Director, Office of the Chief of Military Intelligence.

In 2016, Knapp assumed command of the 504th Expeditionary-Military Intelligence Brigade. In October 2017, Knapp deployed the brigade task force to Afghanistan where she was responsible for the execution of ground- and aerial-based intelligence, security and reconnaissance operations across the entire theater.

She relinquished command in Afghanistan and then reported to the Pentagon for duty as the Joint Staff Assistant J-2, supporting two Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during her assignment. Next, Knapp became the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (G-2) for U.S. Army North, focused on securing the Homeland.

Knapp reported to the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2022 where she served as the first Deputy Chief of a newly formed priority organization, charged with prioritizing, synchronizing and operationalizing DIA's capabilities in the mission.

She holds a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy and a Master of Military Arts from the Air Command and Staff College.

Her awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (1OLC), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal.

Knapp is a native of Angleton, Texas, and is close to her mother, brother, sister and nephews.
