Sports out the Wazoo - Jibber
So I was walking into our Tuesday Command and Staff meeting at Pershing Hall when a familiar voice yelled at me from the back steps of Garrison HQ.
“Hey Jibber Jabber. When you going to write something again?”
It was our longtime friend Marcia Eastland, and she has been missing her dose ever since the Soundoff! went the way of the dodo in favor of Digital Meade.
I tried to explain the transition to her, but midway through my explanation, Marcia – the only person not named Jones to pen a Jibber Jabber in its 12-plus years of existence here at Meade – said something that almost got her fancard pulled.
“Chad, there’s too much sports going on! “
After Command and Staff, I went back to Marcia’s office for clarification.
“I got my WNBA, NBA, MLB, NFL, college football, tennis, golf. I can’t keep track of it all”
I reminded her about hockey, horse racing and wrestling before asking her, “What’s the problem?”
We all know 2020 has been crazy, but I would have never thought that “Too much sports” would be a problem, yet here we are with sports pouring out of our proverbial wazoos.
On Monday Night this collision of sports was backing up my airwaves like Route 175 traffic.
It was so bad, I had to watch Tampa Bay win the Stanley Cup on standard definition because the Ravens were laying an egg against the Chiefs on my HD feeds. FYI, Patrick Mahomes is a bad man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC7AUHD7rXE
As for the Ravens, they and their star QB, Lamar Jackson, are looking an awful lot like the Milwaukee Bucks and their star Giannis Antetokounmpo. They are both great against decent teams, but get them up against real competition and they shrink. That’s because both Lamar and Giannis can be shut down, and neither have the teammates to back them up.
I shouldn’t be talking too much junk about the Ravens considering how my Cowboys once again snatched defeat from victory against Seattle. Dallas looked like the same old Cowboys in the first half -- Two interceptions, five defensive holding penalties (four on one drive), fumbling a kickoff that led to a safety, yada, yada, yada.
Of course, Dallas came back, which forced me to watch the game all the way to its tragic end. That made me late for dinner with the Imam -- A big no-no in Muslim circles made worse by the fact I also missed the beginning of Heat-Celtics Game 6.
Looking out over the schedule, we’re likely going to have a similar pileup of sports this weekend with Sunday Night Football crunching right into Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Quick synopsis of the Finals: Lakers in five. LA is too big, strong and talented for Miami’s scrap, superior coaching and nothing-to-lose attitude.
That’s not the case with LeBron, who will lose any claim to being the GOAT if he loses in the finals … again. However, if he wins his fourth title, in his 10th try, with his fourth different team (I know it’s three but he played with Cleveland twice), then King James would have a strong case for the throne as greatest of all time.
Anyway, that’s a whole lotta sports, and I haven’t even gotten to the baseball playoffs … more on that in a few weeks. Unless of course Marcia gets after me first.
