Sergeant Major Donald D. Witt, a native of Illinois, had lived in Anniston, Alabama most of his life. He served 5 tours in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star with “V” Device.

Sergeant Major Witt He began his service with the Chemical Corps as an instructor in the MOS Training Division of the U.S. Army Chemical School at Fort McClellan, Alabama. In all, he served 7 years as an instructor. While there, he supervised instruction in toxic chemical agent transport, storage, tapping chemical agent rounds and removal of chemical agents from rounds. As a subject matter expert, he attended thirty-six various Nuclear, Biological and Chemical test programs and assisted in type classification of eight chemical systems. Most are still in use at USACMLS.

Sergeant Major Witt also managed, as a civilian, the Chemical School participation in the Army material acquisition user testing program for selected system, and served as an independent evaluator in developing Army positions on military utility of tested equipment. SGM Witt continued to live near Fort McClellan after his retirement and many Soldiers and Officers visited him and stated that his legacy extended beyond his time in uniform.

Sergeant Major Donald D. Witt passed away in 2008 at the age of 63.
