Army MWR’s Outdoor Rec celebrates its 50th year of helping Soldiers and family members enjoy life, outside the confines of an office building or workspace.
Romel Voellm, Belvoir MWR’s Outdoor Recreation director, said of everything ODR offers, the boats are very popular and are reserved almost every weekend.
“Kayaking is usually easy for people to pick up and we almost always have them available, for a two-hour or one-day rental,” he said.
Another recent addition for the facility at Accotink Basin, is stand-up, inflatable paddleboards. Voellm said they, along with a collection of other rentable equipment, are handy to take along on a vacation or road trip.
“We have a great variety of fun stuff to do, and our pricing is great, compared to what’s available outside the gates,” Voellm said.
A few years ago, Outdoor Rec opened a travel camp at the basin and has since added a lodging cabin, a one-bedroom A-frame that sleeps 6, with a full bathroom, microwave and refrigerator.
“We keep trying to grow and add new, interesting, fun things and experiences for Soldiers and their families, as they continue to grow and have fun, especially outside,” he said.
ODR has long-standing indoor and outdoor archery facilities and recreational vehicles and trailers to rent,” he added.
Belvoir’s ODR also has canoes and jon boats, a Mako and pontoon boat to rent.
Through August, for ODR’s 50th celebration, patrons who earn two stamps per month on a punch card by enjoying ODR offerings are entered to win prizes.
