Belvoir EFMP, teens invited to job fair
Are you a young person, looking to get a job or internship? If so, Fort Belvoir’s Exceptional Family Member and Employment Readiness programs host an EFMP Youth Employment Fair, 10 a.m.-noon, April 5. In addition to employment representatives from off- and on-post locations, the crowd size is limited to 40 job seekers.
Youth ages 16-21 can meet with potential, local employers, including Mount Vernon, Fairfax County Parks and Recreation; local grocery stores and The Fairfax; in addition to on-post facilities that are hiring,” said Marlo Keller, installation EFMP coordinator. “This event will also facilitate social connections, for those in EFMP and for everyone,” she added. “We’ve all been missing that for so long and virtual events have been exhausting.” “Working gives EFMP kids – and all youth – a sense of belonging, self-worth and, sometimes, a way to help,” Keller said.
The employment fair idea started as an activity for April, which is Autism Awareness Month.
Keller said she expects about 15 employers to attend. Many of them have opportunities for internships for those in high school or heading toward college.
In preparation of the employment fair, Laureen DuPree, from Belvoir Employment Readiness, met with some youth and helped them get ready to join the work force, including what a resume should look like, how to dress appropriately as a job applicant, and business phone manners.
Events for Autism Awareness Month are:
- April 5, 10 a.m.-noon, EFMP Youth Employment Fair
- April 15, law enforcement workshop, 1 p.m.
- April 23, Super sensory Saturday, 10 a.m.
- April 26, Medicaid waiver workshop, 10 a.m.
- April 29, Autism Awareness 1-2-3 Go task boxes, 10 a.m.
