Jefferson County organizations come together
to hold event on diabetes prevention, treatment

 

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2018) – The Diabetes Coalition of Jefferson County will present an evening of education on the prevention and treatment of diabetes from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Samaritan Summit Village. The event will feature speakers and vendors who will discuss diabetes management. This will be an educational opportunity for spouses and other family members as well.

This event is an example of Jefferson County health care providers and organizations coming together to provide a benefit to the community. The coalition promotes services and diabetes programs to the public and providers and develops appropriate interventions to improve overall diabetes care in Jefferson County.

The event is free to attend.

At 4:40 p.m. Maureen Larkins, Cornell Cooperative Extension, will cook a diabetes-friendly dish. The first 50 people will receive a bag of ingredients to make the dish at home, courtesy of Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization.

At 5:30 p.m., Dr. Marisa Desimone from the Joslin Center at Upstate Medical will present “Lifestyle Medicine,” followed by Dr. James V. Stillerman, Samaritan Wound Care Center medical director.

People can listen to speakers and browse vendor tables. Each table will have an expert who can answer questions. There will be information for those with Type 2, Type 1 and gestational diabetes, along with ways to prevent diabetes and lead a healthier lifestyle.

The event also include free healthy snacks and refreshments, courtesy of Samaritan Medical Center.

Vendors scheduled to be at the event include Cornell Cooperative Extension, Samaritan Medical Center, Carthage Area Hospital, Jefferson County Public Health Service, North Country Prenatal Perinatal Council, Community Action Planning Council, and the YMCA.
