Command Sergeant Major George L. Murray

 

Command Sergeant Major George L. Murray, a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, enlisted in the Army in 1939 and was assigned to the 1st Separate Chemical Battalion in Hawaii.

 

After experiencing the attack on Pearl Harbor, Command Sergeant Major Murray attended Chemical Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in the Chemical Warfare Service. He served with the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion in Europe where he was a forward observer, platoon leader, and company commander.

 

After the war, Command Sergeant Major Murray reverted to enlisted status and continued service with the Chemical Corps in the U.S., Europe and Japan. He was the first Chemical Corps Soldier to achieve the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

 

Since retiring in 1969, Command Sergeant Major Murray’s continued support of the Corps has been recognized by appointment as Distinguished Member of the Chemical Corps and Honorary Regimental Sergeant Major.

 

Command Sergeant Major George L. Murray passed away in October of 2019 at the age of 100.
