NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF A DRAFT FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE CHAMBERS LAKE WEIR REMOVAL PROJECT, PIERCE COUNTY, WASHINGTON
Pursuant to Section 102 (2) (C) of the National Environmental Policy Act 1969, as implemented by the Council on Environmental Quality Regulations (40 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 1500 1508), the U.S. Department of the Army (Army) announces the availability for public review and comment of an Environmental Assessment to evaluate the environmental impacts of the removal of the Chambers Lake Weir and restoration of the site on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Pierce County, Washington.
The purpose of the proposed action to remove the Chambers Lake weir in order to restore the natural flow patterns downstream and eliminate an impedance to fish migration. Removal of the structure will also eliminate the need for personnel to monitor and manually adjust the water control structure, eliminate the potential for being liable under the Endangered Species Act if a critical adjustment is missed, and restore the natural fluctuations of the water in Chambers Lake. The Environmental Assessment concludes that implementation of the proposed action would not result in significant direct, indirect, or cumulative impacts to the quality of the human environment.
30-day public comment period is being held to receive written comments on the Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact. Members of the Public, Government agencies, and Tribes are invited to review and comment on the Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact.
