Rock Merritt Road Closure on Pope AAF For Repaving04 Feb 2026 21:09
Rock Merritt Road is closing on Pope AAF from Maynard/Boxcar Streets to Butner Road for repaving/refurbishing. The closure will start on February 16 and is expected to last around 3 months, opening again in May. Fort Bragg’s Directorate of Public Works and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are working through the Intergovernmental Service Agreement to improve or replace drainage, clearance, new curbing and road surfacing. They are also redesigning intersections to improve vehicle flow. Access to the ambulance station at the corner of Maynard Street and Rock Merritt Road will not be affected. The project will be phased with sections closed starting with Butner Road to Hurst Drive. The final phase, paving from Boxcar Street to Stiner Road, will be single lane closures with flaggers and should be completed by June. Access to cross streets through intersections with Rock Merritt will be maintained. There may be occasional flagging operations or signs with detour info. The official detour is through Stiner Road. Fort Bragg suggests that if your normal commute transverses Pope AAF through Manchester Gate to reach your destination beyond Pope AAF that you consider using the R. Miller or Butner gates instead. DPW will retime the lights at Stiner Road and Butner Road to accommodate added traffic, but you should still expect delays during peak periods. Access to Fort Bragg via Hurst Drive to Lewis Street will remain open. Fort Bragg’s IGSA partnership with the NCDOT is positively impacting the installation. The NCDOT has technical expertise for design, construction, and contracting to take our projects from an idea through design to construction. Using the NCDOT, we’ve seen about 40-60% cost savings. That means we can get almost double the work done, bringing Fort Bragg’s roads up to standard faster. For a map of the affected area, click below:
