Mission

The Fort Bragg DPW Environmental Division is committed to environmental excellence in all aspects of the Fort Bragg mission to support the twin pillars of training and ecosystem management. The Endangered Species branch manages and monitors our rare and endangered flora and fauna under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

An endangered species is one that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is one that is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range.

Fort Bragg manages using a philosophy of Ecosystem management

Fort Bragg has one threatened species and four endangered species: (click on each)

  1. Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) - Effective November 25, 2024, the RCW was reclassified from endangered to threatened (i.e., downlisted) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Although the final rule reclassified the RCW to Threatened status, protective regulations under the authority of section 4(d) of the Act are necessary to provide for the continued conservation of this species.
  2. Saint Francis' Satyr
  3. Michaux's Sumac
  4. Rough-leaved Loosestrife
  5. American Chaffseed
