An Environmental Management System (EMS) integrates environmental concerns and issues into an organization’s everyday processes. It enables an organization of any size or type to control the impact of its activities, products, and services on the environment. This allows organizations to comply with environmental requirements while also recognizing and proactively managing future issues that might impact mission sustainability. Base-wide goals are renewed by DPW-Environmental every fiscal year to assist in meeting environmental requirements. Organizational Representatives aid in reaching our fiscal year goals.
To ensure participation from the units, the Environmental Operating Permit (EOP) was developed. Units are given a customized EOP that organizes all of their environmental requirements and makes compliance with environmental laws and regulations easier on the unit.

Program | Objective | Tips |
Energy Management | Reduce JBLM's energy demand through reduced energy use and enhance mission assurance for "never fail" mission critical equipment. | Turn off lights and unplug nonessential equipment when not in use. Consolidate appliances used for personal use (e.g., coffee pots, refrigerators, and microwaves). Adhere to JBLM thermostat set points (78 in winter and 68 in summer). |
Air Quality | Support installation initiative to reduce employee commute trips by 25%. | Consider starting or joining a vanpool. Use alternative transportation (biking, bus, train, carpool, GO-Transit). Consolidate administrative trips across the installation. |
Pollution Prevention | Support installation initiative to prevent environmental pollution with 90% spill training of all units and organizations working with hazardous materials and/or waste. | Ensure that spill training for unit personnel is up to date and recorded in the unit's environmental compliance binder. |
Solid Waste | Support installation initiative to reach 50% diversion rate base wide. | Ensure proper disposal of waste by following recycling guidelines. Post recycling guidelines in your workplace. |
