National Trails Day, StoryWalk event
will take place June 1 in Sackets Harbor

SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. (May 21, 2024) – Hay Memorial Library and Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site will partner for the annual National Trails Day and StoryWalk event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1.

Start your visit at the foot of West Main Street in front of the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site’s navy yard, then follow colorful story panels along the sidewalk from the Battlefield to the Union Hotel building.

The story selected for this event is “Tim Does His Own Thing,” by Bianca Antonissen, a book about talent, diversity, and the importance of doing your own thing. Little peeps following their own path, ages 4 and older, will discover little bird Tim who hatches from his egg. Other birds say he should learn how to fly. All of the fathers and mothers give him their best advice. But Tim isn't so sure. Does he really have to do what everyone else is doing?

Through a grant from Stewart's Shops to the library, a free copy of the book is available to the first 25 children, one book per family. While the supply lasts, children can complete a “make and take” craft that day or take the craft home. During the event you can sign up for a library card!

That’s not all! Pick up free stickers and pins from the American Hiking Society, plus enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage from Athletic Brewing Company, while supplies last.

There’s live music too! From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., hear the melodic sounds of Celtic music made on traditional instruments played by Lindsey Davis, an elementary school music teacher at General Brown Central School District. Lindsey also plays flute with the Clayton Community Band, alto saxophone with the Arrhythmias Jazz Band, and Irish/Celtic music with her mother Deborah Davis – a life-long local musician and teacher.

After finishing StoryWalk, take time at the Union Hotel to explore the Smithsonian’s interactive “Museum on Main Street” exhibit “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” and the “Sackets Harbor in the North Country” exhibit with stories and artifacts. Admission is free admission and open to the public until 4 p.m.
