Chief Warrant Officer 5 Shayne Atkinson

Originally from Harrisville, NY, Chief Warrant Officer Five Shayne Atkinson enlisted in the U.S Army in 1991.  From 1992 to 1994 he served as an Aerial Observer, an Air Assault Instructor and Rappel Master in N Troop, 4-11th Armed Cavalry Regiment in Fulda, Germany and as an Aerial Observer in E Troop, 1-7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

In 1994 he attended Warrant Officer Candidate School and the Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) course at Fort Rucker, Alabama.  After graduating from IERW he was assigned to the 57th Medical Company, 55th Medical Group from 1995 until 1998 where he served as a Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) Pilot in Command supporting military and Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic missions.

From 1998 to 1999 CW5 Atkinson served in C Company, 1-52nd Aviation Regiment at K-16, Seoul, Korea as a VIP Pilot in Command and Operations Officer.  From 1999 to 2000 he was assigned to B Company, 2-10 Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division where he served as an Air Assault Pilot in Command.

From 2001 to 2008, CW5 Atkinson joined the Vermont Army National Guard, C Company, 3-126th Aviation Battalion, performing MEDEVAC missions. In 2003 he graduated from the UH-60 Instructor Pilot Course and in 2004 from the Rotary Wing Instrument Flight Examiner Course.  From 2005 to 2006 he deployed as the Company Standardization Officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom attached to the 7th General Support Battalion, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Ali Airbase in Tallil, Iraq.

In 2008, CW5 Atkinson returned to Active Duty and was assigned to Bravo Company, 3-227th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.  From 2009 to 2010 he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Taji, Iraq performing duties as the Company Standardization Officer.  In 2010 he was assigned as the Battalion Standardization Officer.  From 2011 to 2012 he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Shindand, Afghanistan.

From 2013 to 2015 CW5 Atkinson was assigned to the Command Aviation Detachment in Heidelberg, and later in Wiesbaden, Germany as the Standardization Officer in support of the United States Army Europe Commander.  From February 2015 to July 2016 he worked in USAREUR G3 Aviation as a Tactical Operations Officer and then as the Aviation Standardization Officer.

From 2016 to 2018 he was assigned to 25th Combat Aviation Brigade where he served as the Aviation Standardization Officer and then as the Aviation Mission Survivability Officer.  In June 2018 CW5 Atkinson was assigned to the U.S. Army Pacific Headquarters as the Aviation Standardization Officer.

CW5 Atkinson’s awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (2OLCs), Air Medal (Numeral 4), Army Commendation Medal (4OLCs), Army Achievement Medal (3OLCs), Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 Bronze Stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (3 Bronze Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 5), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Bronze Hourglass and Mobilization Device), NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal, Combat Action Badge, Master Army Aviator Badge, Air Assault Badge and an Order of Saint Michael Medal (Bronze).

CW5 Atkinson is married and has two children.
