FORT DRUM, N.Y. (May 21, 2021) – Instead of turning pages, children walked from cover to cover during the outdoor Story Walk at Robert C. McEwen Library on May 21.
“Rather than our traditional Story Time, where you have the children sit and read, this has them moving from station to station to read the story,” said Allen Goudie, administrative librarian.
Goudie said the event combines reading and fitness, because as the children read the tale of a lazy dog who goes on an adventure to get fit, they too are performing exercises.
"One of the things we like about this is that Soldiers from the BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) program are showing the kids how to do the exercises,” he said. “It gets the Soldiers and the kids involved.”
Spc. Vincent Vue has had a busy first week as the 1st Brigade Combat Team BOSS representative, having recently supported a soccer tournament and a functional fitness challenge. But showing children how to perform a pushup was a unique opportunity for him.
“I just love working with kids, so this is the kind of event I’d volunteer for any day of the week,” Vue said.
He said this was a privilege to be able to meet Fort Drum families and he looks forward to helping with upcoming community events like the Mountain Mudder in June.
“We’re a tight-knit community already, so this is another way to bring people together,” Vue said. “We’re all one Army family.”
Fort Drum Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has been hosting physical challenges and competitions throughout May in support of the Army Strong B.A.N.D.S. (Balance, Activity, Nutrition, Determination, Strength), which promote fitness and wellness for all community members.
