WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Saturday, city officials, along with members of the 10th Mountain Division, unveiled and formally decided this plaque honoring soldiers during the Iraq War at the monument in Thompson Park. It’s the replacement for an identical plaque that was stolen from the monument last summer.
The sculptor, based out of Boulder, Colorado, still had access to the original mold for the plaque, so the new one is an exact replica. Saturday also marked the 250th birthday for the U.S. Army, and this year is the 40th anniversary of the 10th Mountain Division’s reactivation.
“Our legacy is truly represented by the monument you see here today. A monument that resides in a park in our community where it truly belongs, so anyone and everyone can share in its legacy,” said Colonel Matthew Myer.
“It’s great. It’s been a long time coming. Almost a year now. It looks great on there,” said Edward Olley with the Monument Maintenance Committee.
He says he’s all but given up on finding the original plaque. He does, however, add that additional cameras have been installed at the monument.
