In December 1944 and January 1945, the Germans attempted to mount a definitive counter-offensive against the Allies, with the aim of driving them out of the Ardennes. It became known as the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. This is the biggest operation on Belgian soil during World War II.

Although some people see Labor Day as a time for rest, this day is dedicated to paying tribute to workers and acknowledging their contributions to the Belgian economy. The tradition of Labor Day goes back to May 1, 1886, when the first eight-hour workday went into effect by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of Canada and U.S. The FOTLU made the decision to establish eight-hour workdays after massive strikes occurred in the U.S. as workers protested working long days in inhuman conditions.

Seventy five years ago, on April 13, 1944, a B-17 flying fortress, called the "Royal Flush," was coming back from a successful raid over the ball bearing industries in Schweinfurt, Germany when it was hit by the German flak based in Chièvres, Belgium. The plane crashed in a nearby field in Fouleng, Belgium, killing six out of the 10 crew members.

The Defense Commissary Agency is hosting commemorative ceremonies March 29 to recognize veterans who served on active duty during the Vietnam War era. In the Benelux, the ceremonies are scheduled to be held at Chièvres Exchange (PX) Mall from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and the Schinnen Commissary from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to U.S. Army Europe, tax centers re-prioritized services in 2019 and focused assistance on those who make less than $54,000 per year, in accordance with Army regulations and IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance guidelines.

Amid the snow and iced conditions, Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, became the intermediate staging area for 1st Combat Aviation Brigade as helicopters landed on SHAPE Air Field in late January and early February. The 1st Infantry Division brigade, based out of Fort Riley, Kansas, are in the fourth iteration of a combat aviation brigade rotation in support of Atlantic Resolve, U.S. Army Europe and U.S. European Command.

On Jan. 15, the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) Acting Director approved an extension of the 2018 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). An exact end date has yet to be determined, but payroll allotments, bank drafts, and recurring credit card donations will be delayed until after the lapse in appropriations ends and paychecks are deposited to furloughed employees’ bank accounts.

Although the Benelux region has a milder climate compared to other areas in Europe, it is wise to be informed when inclement weather hits the area. Garrison officials at U.S. Army Garrison Benelux installations will do everything they can to keep services running, but some weather conditions may result in changes in road conditions, school closures, work delays or temporary shutdown on some of the garrison services.

Beginning Feb. 1, 2019, U.S. Passport Services will be limited at all Central Processing Facilities in the Benelux: SHAPE, Brussels and JFC Brunssum.
USAG Benelux will continue providing U.S. official no-fee passport issue and renewal by appointment only.

Due to the current renovations of nuclear plants in Belgium, there are reports of possible planned power outages in the country during the winter. While the Belgian government is trying to prevent a power shortage, people should be prepared in the event of an outage this season.

The Chièvres Veterinary Clinic celebrated the grand opening of its new facility Nov. 29 on Chièvres Air Base, Belgium. The new facility's opening marks the beginning of U.S. Army Garrison Benelux's move from Caserne Daumerie to Chièvres Air Base.
