This year marks the 77th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Dorchester (SC-290583) and the legendary acts of selflessness of four Army chaplains who were aboard. Four Chaplains Day, as U.S. Congress has declared, honors the four chaplains who went down with their ship and gave their life jackets to other passengers. Since Jan. 1, 2020, more diesel vehicles are banned in the Brussels-Capital Region. The Belgian capital just introduced a ban on the movement of Euro 3 diesel vehicles. If you have a “category M1” car registered between Jan. 1, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2005, or a “category N1” van, you are no longer authorized to drive it in Brussels.

The city of Bastogne celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge from Dec. 13 to 16. In December 1944 and January 1945, the Germans attempted to mount a definitive counter-offensive against the Allies, with the aim of driving them out of the Ardennes. It became known as the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. This is the biggest operation on Belgian soil during World War II. We asked five people to explain us why they were in Bastogne this year.

MAINE, LUXEMBOURG and NETHERLANDS -- Wreaths Across America (WAA) announced it has been granted permission by the Luxembourg and Netherlands authorities and the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to place Maine-made balsam fir veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all 5,073 U.S. service members laid to rest at Luxembourg American Cemetery, and an additional 8,291 veterans’ wreaths at Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial.

In the days leading up to Sept. 2, 1944, Germans, posted in Belgium and across the French border, were getting nervous as the Allied forces were approaching. The Allies liberated northern France and prepared to liberate Belgium. Cendron, Belgium, was one of the first villages to be liberated by American forces who landed on Normandy's beaches a few months earlier.

2019 is a very special year for Belgium and for Mons in particular. In September 1944, American troops entered Belgian territory. Mons was one of the first cities in Belgium to be liberated.
