Eight countries to compete in Women’s World Cup in France

CHIÈVRES, Belgium -- Twenty four women’s national teams are competing to win the eighth edition of the FIFA World Cup, a worldwide soccer event that occurs every four years. This year’s competition is held throughout France in June and July.

There are just eight countries left to compete: U.S., The Netherlands, Germany, Norway, England, France, Italy and Sweden.

The U.S. women’s team, who won the last World Cup in 2015, will play the French team in Paris on June 28 in the quarterfinals. France wants to be the first country to hold men’s and women’s World Cup titles in one year, but the U.S. women’s team has also a good chance to win the competition. The team scored 13 goals against Thailand and also defeated Chile, Sweden and Spain.

The Netherlands and Germany are two other fan favorites. The Netherlands will play against Italy on Saturday in Valenciennes, a city located about 25 minutes from Chièvres. There will not be another game in Valenciennes until the competition’s final rounds.

Norway will play against England on Thursday starting at 9 p.m. in Le Havre. Germany will play against Sweden on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. in Rennes.

The semi-finals will be held July 2 and 3 in Lyon. The final is scheduled for July 7 in Lyon.
