Brussels student wins Oratorical Contest

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- On Saturday, Feb. 22, Victoria Geehreng, a junior at the Brussels American High School, competed in the American Legion Department of France's 2020 Oratorical “Scholarship” Contest in Ansbach, Germany.

As the winner of the contest, she now advances to the National Oratorical Contest in April at Indianapolis, Indiana.  She will compete against 52 other candidates from around the United States for a $20,000 scholarship.

Since 1938, the oratorical contest has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States.
