Installation Bugle Calls

REVEILLE:

Service members were taught their first day in uniform what to do when these bugle calls sound. They face the flag — or toward the music if the flag is not visible — come to attention and render the hand salute for “Reveille.” Those driving on Grant Ave. will continue as normal. Those driving on any other road on post will: pull over, park, exit the vehicle safely, and render honors.

RETREAT:

Soldiers in formation: execute the commands of the officer or non-commissioned officer in charge.

Soldiers in uniform but not in formation: face the flag or direction of the music. Stand at the position of attention until the firing of the cannon or the first note of "To the Colors,” then render a hand salute.

Civilians and Soldiers wearing civilian clothes: face the flag, come to the position of attention, remove headgear with right hand, and place right hand over the heart until the last note of music. Soldiers and veterans may render a hand salute rather than placing their hand over their heart.

Those driving on Grant Ave. will continue as normal. Those driving on any other road on post will: pull over, park, exit the vehicle safely, and render honors.

TAPS:

For nightly taps, the flag has already come down, so there is no need to render courtesies to the bugle call. The call indicates the end of the duty day. At a military funeral when taps is played, a flag is present, and courtesies are involved.
