There are many things you can do to stay prepared for severe winter weather:
* You can check on-post road conditions by calling 772-DRUM (3786) or by visiting the Fort Drum home page at https://home.army.mil/drum/. Check off-post road conditions and incidents at https://511ny.org. ⚠
* Stay informed by paying attention to weather forecasts and follow instructions given in official weather advisory, watch, or warning messages. You can enable alerts from the FEMA or Weather Channel mobile apps. NOAA radios also will broadcast official messages.
* Now is the time to make sure you have a family emergency plan. Don't be intimidated, use the resources at https://ready.gov/make-a-plan to help guide you!
* Make sure you have necessary emergency supplies to get you through an extended power outage or other conditions. Get details from https://ready.gov/kit and see the attached Fort Drum Preparedness Flyer for examples of items to keep on hand at home and in your vehicle for when disaster strikes.
* Check your vehicle to make sure tires are serviceable, you have ample wiper fluid, wiper blades are not worn, and there are no safety issues. It is also a good idea to keep your fuel tank no less than half full in winter weather.
* If you have a generator, make sure that it works and you have a fuel supply for the weekend. If you need to use a generator, always use it in a well-ventilated, outside area. NEVER run a generator indoors, even for a minute! If you use alternate heat sources inside, such as kerosene or space heaters, follow the safety instructions in the manual and never leave heat sources unattended.
* Lastly, maintain safety awareness of your environment. Stay away from flooded areas and downed tree limbs or power lines. It is a good idea to check on your neighbors as well.
