A native of Stoneville, Mississippi, Major General (MG) David Lamme Stone graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1898. He saw action in the Spanish-American War and during World War I he was responsible for the development and building of Camp Lewis with the specific mission of creating a training center that could house up to 50,000 Soldiers. He accomplished the task in 90 days and was made the Commander of Camp Lewis. His military honor are the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. From his overseas assignments, MG Stone was awarded the French legion of Honor and French Croix de Guerre with Palm, the Belgian Order of Leopold and the Panamanian Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa. This Education Center is named in honor of MG Stone's distinguished Army career spanning 42 years. He is interred in the Fort Lewis Cemetery.
