Ride-share information for drivers

The U.S. Army launched a pilot ride-share access program to improve installation access for service members, their families, retirees and civilians living at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and five other installations. The ride-share access pilot will standardize access procedures and requirements to safely increase ridership and promote additional transportation options. If successful, the Army plans to expand the program to additional installations across the country.

This program allows both Department of Defense and non-DOD affiliated U.S. citizens to obtain an Installation Access Card (IAC) for the purpose of providing rideshare services on the installation. All applicants must verify current employment as a ride-share driver before an IAC can be issued.

Step 1: Obtain a Base Access Pass

Before receiving your IAC, you must first obtain a base access pass from the Lewis Main Visitor Control Center, located off Exit 120 on Interstate 5 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To qualify for a base access pass, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Present identification that meets REAL ID requirements, such as:
    - Enhanced Driver’s License
    - U.S. Passport
    - Social Security Card with Certified U.S. Birth Certificate
    - Veteran Health Identification Card
    - Federal Employee ID Card
    - Tribal ID
  • Provide a valid driver’s license
  • Provide current vehicle registration
  • Provide proof of auto insurance
  • Pass a criminal background check

Step 2: Receive Your Installation Access Card (IAC)

Once base access is approved, eligible drivers will be directed to the Vehicle Registration Office at Waller Hall to request their IAC. The Vehicle Registration Office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Once approved, the IAC is valid for one year for DOD-affiliated drivers and six months for non-DOD drivers.
