Course Overview:
The Cold Weather Operations Course introduces students to the characteristics of cold environments, effects of cold on personnel and materiel, use of basic cold weather clothing and equipment, winter field craft, snowshoe / ski techniques, and winter / cold regions navigation and route planning. An emphasis is placed on cold weather risk mitigation and cold weather injury prevention, identification, and treatment throughout the course.
Course Scope:
Phase 1 – Cold Weather & Alpine Terrain:
Students receive classes on alpine terrain and surviving in cold weather environments. Students learn identification and basic treatment of cold weather injuries, proper use of ECWCS, employment of a squad ahkio group, water procurement, over snow mobility equipment and cold weather field craft.
Phase 2 – FTX & Recovery Operations:
Students apply knowledge and skills learned from previous phases in a field environment. As a squad / platoon-sized element, students execute a tactical movement, establish a cold weather patrol base and culminate with a collective task.
