Command Sergeant Major Michael Suppes has been serving as the Command Sergeant Major of the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion since Jan. 12, 2023.

Command Sergeant Major Michael W. Suppes is a native of Chino Hills, California. He enlisted in the Army in March 1996 and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Upon his graduation from Advanced Individual Training from the United States Army Military Intelligence Center of Excellence in Fort Huachuca, AZ, he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of 35F, Intelligence Analyst.  CSM Suppes has served in various levels of leadership and Military Intelligence positions throughout his career.

CSM Suppes’ duty assignments include the 500th MI Brigade in Camp Zama, Japan; 513th MI Brigade, Fort Gordon, GA; Army Central Command – G2, Saudi Arabia; 501st MI BN, 1st Armor Division, McCully Barrack, Germany; Joint Analysis Center, Molesworth, United Kingdom; 511th MI Company, Regimental Support Squadron, 11th ACR, Fort Irwin, CA; Military Transition Team – Basra, Iraq; F Company, 229th MI BN, Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, California; C Company, 1st MI BN, 66th MI BDE, Wiesbaden, Germany; NATO Rapid Deployment Corps – J2, Istanbul, Turkey; 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii; 704th MI BDE, Fort Meade, MD; and Intelligence – Capability Development and Integration Directorate, Fort Huachuca, AZ. 

CSM Suppes’ military and civilian education include the Army Sergeant Major Academy, Company Commander/First Sergeant Course, Basic and Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, Intelligence Analysis Course, Equal Opportunity Leader Course, Sexual Harassment and Response Prevention Course, Combative Level 1, and Command Language Program Manager Course.  He has earned an Associate degree in Management from American Military University, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Excelsior College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Leadership and Workforce Development from Command and General Staff College.

His overseas tours include Japan, Germany, Turkey, England, Saudi Arabia (as part of Operation Southern Watch), and two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 1st Armored Division and on a Military Transition Team.

CSM Suppes military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4rd Award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2nd Award), Iraqi Campaign Medal (2nd Award), Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (4th Award), Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon (6th Award). CSM Suppes is also a recipient of the Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award. 

CSM Suppes married his wife Maite in July 1994. He has two daughters Michelle and Katherine, and one granddaughter Amelia.
