Fort Drum garrison commander issues early release order for personnel April 8

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (April 4, 2024) – Due to the predicted extreme road congestion in our area caused by an influx of visitors viewing the solar eclipse, the Fort Drum garrison commander has issued an early release order for Monday, April 8. Unless notified otherwise by their chain of command, non-emergency / non-essential uniformed military personnel and civilians will be released from duty / work at 11:30 a.m.

Of note, but not exclusive to, individuals supporting the following events are mission essential on April 8:

  • Joint Readiness Training Center deployment operationsSolar Eclipse artwork.jpg
  • 10th Combat Aviation Brigade deployment operations
  • 2nd Brigade Combat Team redeployment operations
  • Exercise Thunder Peak
  • Division staff conducting military decision-making process (MDMP)


Please contact your chain of command or supervisor with any questions regarding mission-essential status.

All MEDDAC, DENTAC, and services at Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic will close at noon. Please call your health care provider for guidance if you have an appointment scheduled after the early release.

Fort Drum FMWR offices will be closed as staff supports the Solar Eclipse Viewing Event from noon to 4 p.m. at The Peak.

Child and Youth Services (Child Development Centers, School Age Center) will close at noon. The Youth Center will be closed.

All gyms will remain open, following normal business hours.

The Commissary and all Army and Air Force Exchange Service facilities will follow normal business hours.  

We urge all members of the Fort Drum community to exercise caution when traveling on April 8 and ensure you have any supplies you may need for that day before the solar eclipse event.
