Course Description:

Provides specialized training to personnel who will conduct Protective Service Operations for executive level DoD leaders who are potential targets of terrorism and/or criminal acts. Emphasis is placed on the full spectrum of protective operations including Doctrine and Terminology, Coordination and Mission Planning, Protective Services in a Hostile Fire Zone, Special Weapons Training, Evasive Driving and Motorcade Operations. Training culminates with a comprehensive four-day practical exercise.

COURSE PREREQUISITES ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION:

All students must report with a minimum of two copies of their official travel orders.

WAIVERS:

For students attending this course who require a waiver for any of the prerequisites listed on ATRRS, the unit must submit the waiver to the Director of Training and Education (DOT&E), United States Army Military Police School (USAMPS), Fort Leonard Wood, MO 65473-8929 a minimum of 60 days from the start of the course. Students with approved waivers must report with a copy of the waiver for in-processing.Sample of a waiver request.

PHYSICAL CONDITION AND PROFILES:

This course requires a high degree of physical fitness. Participants must negotiate an obstacle course, run, jump, wear protective equipment (body armor, ballistic eye protection, etc.) and will come in contact with other students or instructors during several phases of training. Vehicle dynamics and evasive maneuvers involve quick acceleration, abrupt stops, spins, high speed events and deliberate vehicle-to-vehicle contact.

Personnel with temporary profiles are not authorized to attend the course. Personnel with permanent profiles must request a waiver to attend the course. The approved waiver request must be presented during in-processing. The waiver request must be approved by the Director of Training and Education.

The permanent profile cannot prevent the student from participating and completing all required tasks.

Civilian students must report with medical clearance from a physician attesting the student is cleared for strenuous activity.

Military students who are 40 years of age or older, must provide a copy of current MEDPRO medical readiness profile which confirms Army physical examination and PHA policy compliance.

Pistol Qualification:

All students are required to be qualified with their service pistol IAW their specific service requirements.

Students are required to provide a valid qualification scoresheet or other document verifying valid qualification status upon in-processing the course. Failure to provide proper qualification documents will result in the student not being enrolled into the course.

Pistol qualification will be conducted day one of the course. Anyone not successfully qualifying on the PSTC Pistol Qualification is subject to a Student Status Review and potential removal from the course.

Students should report possessing a reasonable degree of safety and accuracy with the service pistol and be knowledgeable in the firearms’ tasks outlined in TC 19-220.

Orders and pistol qualification are the only documents required for in-processing. If a waiver was approved, the student who received a waiver must also report with approved waiver in hand.

Special Information:

CID Special Agents (311A & 31D) attending course are authorized (but not required) to bring their assigned M18 (NOT ADW) for range days.  Special Agents are required to secure their assigned weapons IAW CID Regulation 190-14.

IAW AR 600-55, students must have a valid civilian driver's license.

THIS COURSE IS NOT RELEASABLE TO STUDENTS OF FOREIGN COUNTRIES

Topics:

Graduates will meet regulatory requirements and be trained to plan, coordinate, and conduct all aspects of protective service missions. The extensive curriculum includes the following:

 

  • Protective Services Doctrine

  • Surveillance Detection and Route Analysis

  • Unarmed Defense Against and Attack

  • Dismounted Formations

  • Arrivals and Departures

  • Mission Coordination and Planning

  • Advances and Site Survey

  • Special Weapons Training

  • Vehicle Dynamics - Sedan / SUV /

  • Evasive Maneuvers - Sedan / SUV /

  • Motorcade Operations and Vehicle Handling - Sedan / SUV /

  • Students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge in a final practical exercise and be able to pass a final written examination

  • A comprehensive final practical exercise allows students to plan, coordinate, and execute an actual protective service mission. Graduates will be required to pass a written examination at the conclusion of training and qualify with the M18 Pistol.

  • Marking Systems (MRs) are utilized during practical exercises.

Graduation Dates:

Graduation will be at the completion of training on the 3rd Friday of the course. Generally around 1600 hrs. We highly recommend making return flight arrangements for later in the evening on the day of graduation. It is a 2.5 hour drive to St. Louis from Fort Leonard Wood.

Transportation Issues:

Commands are encouraged to authorize a rental vehicle. The distance from billeting to the training area is such that walking is not an option. Students may be billeted off post and training areas are located at remote sites. Students must coordinate with their current command for rental car approval and orders must state "RENTAL VEHICLE IS AUTHORIZED". If a POV is authorized, ensure orders state: "IN AND AROUND MILEAGE IS AUTHORIZED". In and around travel of no more than 20 miles per day should be authorized if billeted on post, 30 miles per day if billeted off post. Taxis are available on the installation.

If driving, the most direct route is by Interstate 44 between Saint Louis and Springfield, MO. Fort Leonard Wood is located near the city of Saint Robert, MO approximately 140 mile west of St. Louis and 90 miles east of Springfield. Turn south off I-44 onto I-44 business spur at exit 161, the Fort Leonard Wood main gate is approximately 2.5 miles.

If traveling by air to St. Louis International Airport (STL); commercial bus lines are available for transportation to Fort Leonard Wood. Rental vehicle from St. Louis: Exit St. Louis Airport to Highway (Hwy) 70 West. Continue on hwy 70 to exit 270 South (Memphis). Travel 270 South to I-44 exit west. Continue on I-44 West (approximately 125 miles), exit at 161 to Fort

Commercial taxis are available on a 24-hour basis for transportation on post.

Where to Report:

Students initially arriving to the Protective Services Training Course must report to the Candlewood Suites (Bldg 2020), Fort Leonard Wood, MO (Map to BLDG 2020 and Parker Hall below) on Sunday prior to the start of the course to obtain their in-processing packet. The Protective Services Training Course welcome letter is below; the dates will change but the instructions will remain the same for each class. Upon completion of in-processing on Monday morning, students will receive further guidance by the course cadre. In-processing will take place at 0630 hours located at Range 13, Bldg. 5531, (Classroom), Fort Leonard Wood, MO 65473. Follow directions in the welcome letter.
