Units History

The 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade’s history began on 1 July 1957, constituted at Fort Benning, Georgia as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 3rd Infantry Division Trains.  Subsequently re-designated on 15 March 1968 and then on 21 May 1972 as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Infantry Division Support Command, relocating to Germany in support of the Division during the Cold War, returning to Fort Stewart, Georgia in 1996.  The Brigade would remain as the Division Support Command until late 2004, to then change their name to the 3rd Division Support Brigade.  On June 2005, the 3rd Division Support Brigade re-designated as the 3rd Sustainment Brigade.  The 3rd Sustainment Brigade remained until 20 January 2021, re-designated as the 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade, fully assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.
The 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade has deployed multiple times during the Global War on Terrorism, beginning in 2002 to Operation Iraqi Freedom I in support of 3rd Infantry Division and the famed “Thunder Run” to Baghdad.  The Brigade would deploy three more times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, 2007, and 2010; providing critical sustainment support to sister 3ID units as well as Joint and Combined partners during the critical troop surge and initial draw down of OIF.  The Brigade later deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012 and 2017, providing uninterrupted support to maneuver forces and facilitating the closure of 61 Forward Operating Bases.
In June 2021, the 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Freedom Sentinel, and Operation Allies Refuge. The Brigade has overseen many accomplishments while serving as the Theater Sustainment Brigade ensuring support to the CENTCOM AOR with critical supplies at the point of need. The 3rd Division Sustainment Brigade was integral to the closure of Operation Freedom Sentinel, facilitating the retrograde of equipment into Kuwait and onward movement for transfer and divestment. One week after assuming the mission, the Brigade deployed a Tactical Command Post to Camp As Saliyah, Qatar and rapidly built capacity at a closing base to receive, safeguard, house, and onward move evacuees from Afghanistan in support of Operation Allies Refuge; the Nation’s single largest humanitarian airlift in history.
During the final days of Operation Freedom Sentinel, the Brigade played a vital role in moving personnel and equipment into Hamid Karzai International Airport to sustain the airlift, ultimately providing the professional reverence and repatriation of thirteen fallen service members through Kuwait to their loved ones in the United States.  In addition, the Brigade ensured adequate stock of munitions by overseeing the successful completion of two Quarterly Ammunition Vessel Shipments, transporting over 600 containers across multiple countries in the CENTCOM AOR. Subsequently, in a test of the Trans Arabian Network and interoperability with our partners in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Brigade completed the first ever military convoy from one side of Saudi Arabia to the other and into Kuwait, further bolstering ties with our allies in this critical region.
Supporting from the Rhine River Valley, to the coastal area of Georgia, from the Deserts of Iraq, to the Mountains of Afghanistan, and across the Entirety of the CENTCOM AOR, the 3D Division Sustainment Brigade is the lifeblood of the Marne Division, vital for victory, and the embodiment of our motto:
