The mission of the Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division (DPWE) is the overall management of the Army environmental programs for Presidio of Monterey, Ord Military Community, and SATCOM Camp Roberts that functions in accord with the installation mission of language training; is consistent with installation, Installation Management Command, Department of the Army, and Department of Defense guidance, requirements and regulations; and complies with all applicable environmental Federal, state and local laws and regulations. The mission includes four major areas of responsibility: Compliance, Conservation, Restoration, and Pollution Prevention. Environmental stewardship of the lands of the POM and OMC emphasizes sustainability of environmental resources for future generations while supporting mission requirements.
Major program areas of the DPWE include hazardous waste, storm water management, air quality management, underground storage tanks, drinking water/ wastewater, environmental documentation/NEPA, natural resources/endangered species management, pest management, and cultural resources/historic preservation. The DPWE mission includes the responsibility to ensure that all environmental statutory and regulatory projects, permits and programs are implemented, funded, coordinated, maintained, documented, evaluated, and reported as appropriate. The DPWE provides training and education for all involved unit and tenant activities in each of the pertinent program areas. DPWE is responsible for reporting environmental program status to Army headquarters and Federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
DPWE mission extended into the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) cleanup program when closure of Fort Ord occurred in 1993 and has been an integral constituent of the environmental cleanup process since. DPWE responsibilities include coordinating with the Directorate of BRAC on property cleanup projects that may impact the POM mission or residents of the Ord Military Community (OMC.)
