Advise and represent Soldiers currently undergoing Military Evaluation Board (MEBs) in the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) process. Provide outreach to inform Soldiers of the importance of exercising their right to counsel. Provide MEB Counsel support to Community Care Unit (CCU, formerly Community-Based Warrior Transition Unit). Develop professional relationships with other stakeholders [Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLOs), Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB)/CCU, Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC), Ombudsman, etc.] in IDES. Provide traditional Legal Assistance [Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), family law, consumer law, wills, notaries, etc.] to Soldiers while assigned to the WTB or CCU. Provides assistance/counsel up to and including receipt of Informal Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) results and election of formal PEB (additionally maintains responsibility of Veterans Affairs (VA) rating appeals under IDES).
The services of the SMEBC Office are provided without charge.
Walk-in services are available Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. for Powers of Attorney and notarizations. Most other issues are handled by appointment only.
