On July 29 the Army Chaplain Corps will celebrate the 246th Anniversary of its historic beginning. From the very moment in 1775 that Gen. George Washington was said to utter the words, “We need chaplains,” they have been at the heart of every war in which this nation has fought, caring for the soul of the Army.

A new chapter in the installation’s “illustrious history” was ushered in June 18 as Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Michaelis took command of the Army Training Center and Fort Jackson from Brig. Gen. Milford H. “Beags” Beagle Jr. during a change of command ceremony at Hilton Field.

Vincent Grewatz, director of Installation Management Command’s Directorate of Training, cautioned Col. Ryan Hanson that “nothing you have done in your career will prepare you for this job,” after the latter he took command of Fort Jackson’s garrison June 15.

William Campbell knows a lot about tanks. He has volunteered with museums on Fort Jackson and most recently the South Carolina National Guard Museum where he helped restore tracked vehicles. His volunteer work would bring him in close contact with the tanks outside the Basic Combat Training Museum on post.

Female Soldiers met at post headquarters to kick off Fort Jackson’s chapter of the Female Mentoring and Morale Program June 8. The program provides female Soldiers a safe place to address personal and professional issues that occur while serving in the Army.
