PERMESSO DI SOGGIORNO (PERMIT OF STAY)

Civilian employees, Contractors and all dependents are required to apply for a soggiorno upon arrival in Italy. Soggiorno will allow the applicants to legally remain in Italy for the entirety of the sponsor's (Soldier/DoD civilian/contractor) tour.  Without it, U.S. citizens are only allowed to remain in Italy up to 90-days.

  • To enter Italy: 
    • Service Members' dependents: No-Fee Passport with D Missione Visa
    • GS and dependents: Official passport and D Missione Visa
    • Contractors and dependents: Tourist passport and D Missione Visa                            
  • To stay in Italy: Soggiorno 

NOTE: Without these documents, dependents (except EU citizens) are considered tourists limited to maximum 90 days in country with little support authorized from the U.S. Army. D Missione Visas are issued by Italian Embassies/Consulates in the Country of origin.

SOGGIORNO APPLICATION PROCESS

 Camp Ederle: Within eight days of arrival, the sponsor must send an email to  usarmy.italy.id-europe.mbx.soggiorno-office-mailbox@army.mil listing the following information: Sponsor's full name and Rank/Grade, all dependents' full names, dates of birth, citizenship and arrival date in Country. Soggiorno office will then contact you with all the information.

Camp Darby:  Sponsor and all dependents (ages 14 and older) must visit the Soggiorno Office room # 154 to start the application process. Do not wait to have a housing contract to start the application. Soldier is required to be present if located in Camp Darby.

UK citizens living in Italy

Any UK citizens living in Italy prior to Dec. 31, 2020, their accompanying dependents (including dependents arriving after Dec. 31, 2020) can request a digital Soggiorno from the Questura. If you reside in Vicenza in order to request a digitial Soggiorno, please send an email to
immig.quest.vi.regnounito@pecps.poliziadistato.it

The Soggiorno Office on Caserma Ederle is not authorized to submit these requests.

The Questura will schedule an appointment and request specific documentation. 
Requests for digital Soggiornos must be made directly to the Questura. UK citizens arriving in Italy January 1, 2021 and after, must enter the country with a D Missione Visa in order to apply for a Soggiorno.

Soggiorno applications can take several months to process.

What is a SOGGIORNO?

“Soggiorno” is a permit to stay in Italy. Soggiorno is the equivalent of the U.S. Green Card.

When do I need to apply for my dependents' SOGGIORNO?

Newly arrived personnel must contact Soggiorno Office within eight days from arrival to get all the proper information. Soldiers do not need a Soggiorno but every other American and non-EU citizens do.

Is there an application that needs to be completed?

Yes, the application will be provided to you by the Soggiorno office.

Does the Soldier have to be present to apply for the Soggiorno?

Camp Ederle- Yes, the sponsor must be present.

Camp Darby- Yes, the sponsor must be present.

Who has to be present to apply for the Soggiornos?

Each family member must be present to apply.

Can someone else pick up my Soggiorno for me?

No. Each applicant 14 years and above must sign for his/her own soggiorno. Soggiornos for applicants under 14 years old can be picked up by their parents.

How soon can I renew my Soggiorno?

You can begin the process to renew your soggiorno as early as 60 days prior to its expiration.

Newborns in Italy

In order to apply for the newborn's soggiorno you need to provide 4 photos, the original Italian birth certificate and the official passport. You can start the process with the tourist passport but the official one is still required. We recommend that you also contact or stop by the Soggiorno Office to check if any extra documentation is required for your specific situation.

I am out-processing. Do I have to turn in my Soggiorno?

Yes, you do. Soggiornos are Italian Government's property.

What if my dependent is from the United Kingdom?
