Colonel Michael Simmering was commissioned as an Armor Officer in 1993 following graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.  His first assignment was with 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR), Fort Bliss, Texas where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader and, later, Scout Platoon Leader.  In 1995, COL Simmering moved with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to Fort Carson, Colorado.  While at Fort Carson, he continued his service with 1st Squadron as a Company Executive Officer and Assistant Squadron Operations Officer.


Following graduation from the Armor Officer Advanced Course, COL Simmering served in operations positions within III Corps, ultimately commanding B Company, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment.  Following Company Command, COL Simmering served as an Observer/Controller at the Combat Maneuver Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany from 2001 to 2003.


In 2004, COL Simmering returned to Fort Carson where he served as the 3d Armored Cavalry Regimental Plans Officer and the 2nd Squadron Operations Officer.  While serving as a Squadron S-3, he deployed to Iraq from 2005-2006 to the Tal Afar District of Ninewah Province, Iraq.  Upon redeployment, COL Simmering moved with the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment to Fort Hood, Texas.  While at Fort Hood, COL Simmering continued service with the 3d ACR as the Regimental S-3 and Regimental Executive Officer to include deploying with the Regiment in 2007 to Mosul, Iraq.


In 2008, COL Simmering was re-assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson. From 2009-2012, he served as the Commander for the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment deploying to the Arghandab District of Khandahar Province, Afghanistan.  Later, he assumed duties as the Division G-3, 4th Infantry Division.  Following Senior Service College, he served as a Deputy Command Center Director for United States Northern Command.  Since 2015 he has served as the Brigade Commander for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Georgia and the Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff for the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk. 


COL Simmering most recently served as the Brigade Commander for 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division from July, 2017 until June 2019.  As a Brigade Commander, COL Simmering deployed in support of Atlantic Resolve in support of US Army Europe and Operation Spartan Shield in support of US Army Central Command.


COL Simmering’s military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, National Defense University.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy as well as Master’s degrees from Kansas State University and the National Defense University.


COL Simmering’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2OLC), Bronze Star (1 OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the Parachutist’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.
