Command Sergeant Major David D. Palmer enlisted in the United States Army on 12 June 1998, and attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. where he attended training as a Combat Engineer. Upon completion of AIT, he was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion Baumholder, GE. Command Sergeant Major Palmer's follow on assignments include 37th Engineer Battalion Fort Bragg, NC; Drill Sergeant Fort Jackson, SC; 3rd BSTB Fort Bragg, NC; 52nd Engineer Battalion Fort Carson, CO; Operations Group Fort Irwin, CA; 299th Engineer Battalion Fort Carson, CO; USASMA Fort Bliss, TX; Division Engineer Cell Sergeant Major 10th Mountain Division Fort Drum, NY; Battalion Command Sergeant Major of 7th Brigade Engineer BN; Operations Group Fort Irwin, CA. CSM Palmer has served in every position from team leader to First Sergeant. His deployments include two deployments to Kosovo in 1999 and 2001, two deployments to Iraq in 2003 and 2008, one deployment to CENTCOM AOR in 2013, one deployment to Afghanistan in 2020.

CSM Palmer has completed all NCO Professional development courses from BLC to the Sergeants Major Course (SMC) at USASMA. He is a graduate of Class 68. He has also completed Sapper Leaders Course, Airborne School, Drill Sergeant School, Combative Level 1 and Battle Staff Course. He holds a bachelor’s in business management from Excelsior University. Command Sergeant Major Palmer is a member of The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and has been awarded the Engineer Bronze De Fleury Medal.
