On Saturday, June 11, 2022, White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) leadership hosted the annual Army Ball for the first time in two years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ball was held at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, where over 200 guests attended in honor of the Army’s 247th birthday.
The event was planned by Capt. Dana O’Donnell, along with Staff Sgt. John Rigsbee, and hosted by WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. Eric D. Little, WSMR Command Sgt. Maj. Jose G. Melendez, U.S. Army WSMR Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Devin Winnegan, White Sands Test Center Commander Col. Shawn Smart, and Executive Director and Deputy to the Commander Robert Stone.
The evening kicked off with a photo studio, cocktail hour, and a receiving line where WSMR leadership and their spouses welcomed the guests. Between ceremonies involving long-standing Veterans and dinner, there were toasts and live jazz music played by the 1st Armored Division Band Fort Bliss.
Greg Heiar, guest speaker and Head Coach of the New Mexico State University Men's Basketball Team, spoke to the guests about tradition, leadership, and hard work.
After the cake cutting, Little’s closing remarks, and the Retiring of the Colors, the DJ opened the dancefloor to guests who danced as the evening came to an end.
