White Sands School student wins Veterans Day Poster Contest

White Sands Missile Range Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Little presented White Sands School student Isabel Della-Ratta with a framed copy of a poster she created for the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade Nov. 6 during the parade.

Della-Ratta, an 8th grade student at White Sands School, is the winner of the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade poster contest and her drawing was used as the cover for the parade program.

The theme for this year's event was "Honoring Korean War Era Veterans".

Isabel rode in a convertible during the parade. The vehicle made a stop by the reviewing stand, where Little congratulated her and presented her with the framed copy.

Della-Ratta said she was inspired to draw the winning poster because of her father, who is a veteran.

Her mother, Gabriella Della-Ratta said she is very proud of her daughter and her drawing.

This is the first time a student from White Sands School wins the poster contest, which has been ongoing for five years. Isabel's drawing was selected out of 100 posters that were submitted for the Veterans Day Parade poster contest organized by the Veterans Day Parade Committee.

Before the start of the parade Little and Command Sgt. Maj. Jose G. Melendez recognized Korean War Veterans along with Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima. The Korean War Veterans were also the Grand Marshalls.

Korean War Veterans recognized include: Carlos Armendariz, USA, Christobal Chavez, USA, Critt Coburn, USA, Henry Diaz, USN, Jose S. Enriquez, USN, Edward Gamboa, USMC, George A. George, USMC&USAF, Sylvester Hernandez, USMC, Kirby Prickett, USAF, Paul Roach, USA, POW, Sam Serna, USA, and Charles Spricka, USA.

Little and Melendez also recognized World War II veteran Simon Mendoza, 99, who was sitting near the reviewing stand.

The White Sands Missile Range Tri-Service Color Guard led the parade.
