Prescribed Fire Planned Oct. 1-2 on Holloman Air Force Base
HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. – A prescribed fire will be conducted on Holloman AFB October 1-2. The treatment area, which covers approximately 95 acres in two different locations, is designed to reduce hazardous fuels and aid in the removal of Salt Cedar, an invasive species.
The first treatment area is close to Lagoon G near the Holloman Wastewater Evaporation Pond which is adjacent to U.S. Highway 70. The burn area is west of the former Holloman Golf Course off of Fortyniner Road. The second burn location is near the Fire Training area off of Sabre Road on base.
For health and safety reasons, the entry road for the Holloman Wastewater Evaporation Pond will be closed to the public from September 26th to October 7th during the removal of Salt Cedar and while conducting burning operations.
Smoke will likely be visible from Alamogordo, Tularosa, Holloman, White Sands National Park and surrounding communities. Lingering smoke may be present for a few days after ignitions are complete.
Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Reference the New Mexico Department of Health website at https://nmtracking.org/fire for information on air quality and protecting your health.
