Navy Groundbreaking

On May 4 the Officer in Charge, Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division Detachment White Sands (NSWC PHD DET WS), Commander Colin Monk, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on White Sands Missile Range for the Navy's newest earth covered magazine.  Due to the nature and location of the facility, invitation to the event was limited but well represented by various members of the WSMR and local community.

This magazine project has been in the planning stages for 10 years.  The process included technical review and approval not only from: Naval Surface Warfare Center, WSMR Garrison and the Fort Bliss Garrison; but also: Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, Army Corps of Engineers, Naval Ordnance Safety and Security Activity, U.S. Army Technical Center for Explosive Safety, Department of Defense Explosive Safety Board and Congressional notification and consent. The magazine will replace one of three magazines constructed in 1947 and will significantly increase the storage capacity that NSWC PHD DET WS can provide to customers, fellow agencies, and our allied partners for RTD&E mission support.
