Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent visits White Sands Missile Range

WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (April 21, 2024) – Ignacio Ruiz, the Superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools, visited White Sands Missile Range on April 12, 2024, as part of his ongoing efforts to expand his knowledge of the region's educational institutions. During his visit, Ruiz was escorted by White Sands Missile Range Garrison Command Sgt. Major Jamal Latore who provided him with a comprehensive overview of the installation's history, mission, and operations.

The tour included a meet and greet between Ruiz and the White Sands Missile Range Commander Col. George Turner. Ruiz was given a detailed overview of the range's unique capabilities, which have made it a critical asset for the U.S. Department of Defense.

As the tour progressed, Ruiz was introduced to various departments and personnel at the installation, including the Middle School Teen Facility and White Sands School. The school is an educational program that provides a unique experience for children of military personnel stationed at the missile range. Ruiz was impressed by the school's commitment to providing quality education and support for military families.

“I am glad to be here and get to know a little more about the base and visit a little more in depth at the school,” said Ruiz. “But I really want to look at what are the resources offered to our kids here at the base. It is great to see that there are fun type of resources and educational resources out here.”

Ruiz wants to ensure that Las Cruces Public Schools are meeting the needs of the families that are based out of White Sands and ensure that they understand the great things that are happening within the district. He also wants them to be aware of the many opportunities the district offers.

It is also important to him that families who are moving have access to the appropriate online resources they need that are up to date.

Overall, the visit was a transformative and enlightening experience for Mr. Ruiz. It left him with a profound appreciation for the pivotal role that White Sands Missile Range plays in the region's educational and military landscape, potentially shaping his future decisions.
