Chelsea Scott on why she serves

WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (April 5, 2022) Spc. Chelsea Scott is an IT specialist here at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). Her work involves solving tech issues ranging from hardware, to software, to visual information challenges her unit faces. She discovered her calling in IT after joining the Army and enjoys the variety of opportunities for growth it provides her. “IT has a wide spectrum of career options, there is everything from security to networking, you learn so many different tools that you can grow and build off of,” Scott said. “The world is cyber.”

When asked why she serves, she said, “I have a family, and I wanted to give them opportunities that I didn’t have. Joining the military and taking on this challenge was really about stepping outside my comfort zone and being part of something bigger, doing something more than just thinking about myself. Joining the Army has become one of the best decisions I have made in my life.”

Scott’s first contract started here on WSMR; she has been on the range since 2018. She enjoys feeling a sense of community here for her and her four beautiful children. “White Sands Missile Range is very family oriented, from the neighborhoods to the school systems, there are so many opportunities to get involved on base,” Scott explained.

Scott is also the President of the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program. The pillars of BOSS include quality of life, community service, recreation and leisure. Participants are able to enhance their lives outside of service, get involved in their communities through volunteering, and assist in the planning and execution of their own recreation and leisure events.

The event Scott has organized and enjoyed the most so far was a Sip and Paint event held at the Frontier Club in February, where she invited the Arts and Crafts Center instructor to guide the BOSS group through their own paintings. Right now she is planning a horseback riding event in Ruidoso, and at the end of the year she is looking to go big, to get the Soldiers to travel out of New Mexico for a trip. “The BOSS program is here! We exist. We want to encourage all single service members to come and participate and give their ideas,” Scott said. “We will only get bigger and better.”
