Colonel Marc J. Austin            Garrison Commander

 

Col. Marc Austin is the Garrison Commander of Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.  He arrived here after attending Senior Service College at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London. Prior to RCDS he was assigned to the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, 7th Army Training Command, Grafenwoehr, Germany, where he served as the Panther Team Deputy Commander for the Maneuver Task Force Operations Group.

 

Col. Austin’s previous command and staff assignments include Commander, 2nd Battalion 69th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.  He deployed the battalion to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve and Defender 2020.  He was the Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (M&RA), Office of the Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C. and the Infantry Branch Assignment Officer, Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

 

From June 2012 to December 2014, he was a planner at III Corps, Fort Cavazos (formerly known as Fort Hood, Texas) where he deployed to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. He was the regimental planner for the 3rd Armor Cavalry Regiment and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute. He commanded Bravo and Headquarters and Headquarters companies of the 1st Squadron, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Cavazos, and deployed several times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

 

As a lieutenant he served as a platoon leader and executive officer with the 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Assault Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and deployed in support of the initial ground war and Operation Iraqi Freedom 1.  

 

Col. Austin holds advanced degrees from Kansas University, the School of Advanced Warfighting, and Kings College London. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Joint Meritorious Service and Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge.
