Registration Requirements
It is mandatory that all returning students register for school each year. Information updates are required to ensure sufficient staff is available to support student population. Registration packets are available upon request through the schools and may be obtained before your arrival.
Required documents include:
- Original orders should identify your DEROS date and family member's authorization to travel at government expense.
- Verification of Employment from CPO for Local Hire Sponsors (required annually).
- School Medical Record Screening: Immunizations MUST be up-to-date prior to registration. The Camp Zama medical Clinic will validate that shots are up-to-date and provide the form stating such. Shot records are a
must before you can enroll your child in school or daycare. - School Registration Packet must be complete and all supporting documents signed to ensure no delay in registration.
- Bus Registration is available at the Bus Registration Office located in Bldg 919, Room 508, phone 263-4151.
- Birth Certificate or current passport to validate the child's age.
- Social Security Number for the child is required by regulation for students attending DODDS schools.
- Report cards - Bring the last report card the child received.
- Transcripts - If hand carried, the document(s) must be sealed when it's turned over to the school here. You may also request for the school you child is leaving to give you a copy and mail the official transcripts.
A typical school year for the Camp Zama area schools runs from the last week in August to the second week in June. Schedules vary for both the elementary and high schools. Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDs) provide tuition free school at Camp Zama. Youth assigned to Camp Zama can attend two schools in the area:
- Elementary School children grades pre K-6 attend John O. Arnn Elementary School, located in the Sagamihara Family Housing Area, about 3 miles from the main base. Special programs are available in reading improvement, English as a second language, art, music, and Japanese culture. DoDEA changed its Early Child Hood Education programs entrance requirements for all DoDDS in 2010. Age requirements are:
- Sure Start and Pre-Kindergarten Programs, a child must be 4 years of age by September 1.
- Kindergarten Programs, a child must be 5 years of age by Sept.1.
- First Grade, a child must be 6 years of age by September 1.

- Middle (Jr.) and High School Students in grades 7 through 12 share the same campus at Zama American High School on Camp Zama. 650 students from all the housing areas, and Atsugi Naval Air Facility and surrounding off-base locations are bused to school.
