Just arrived at the Darby Military Community? The vehicle registration process is straightforward and can be completed online before reporting to the Motor Vehicle Registration Office. The vehicle registration process is straightforward, and your initial applications can be completed online before you visit the office.
All vehicles must be registered annually. Maintaining an active annual registration is also required to receive your new fuel card each year, which allows you to purchase tax-free fuel and oil coupons for your primary vehicle.
NOTE: If you need to register a vehicle on your sponsor's behalf, you must have a valid Power of Attorney (POA). It is highly recommended to establish a Special or General POA before departing your current duty station to prevent delays upon arrival.
Important Registration Rules
- Annual Requirement: All vehicles must be registered annually. Maintaining an active registration is required to receive your tax-free fuel card each year to purchase fuel and oil coupons.
- Power of Attorney (POA): If you are registering a vehicle on your sponsor's behalf, you must have a valid General or Special POA. It is highly recommended to establish this before departing your current duty station.
- No Walk-Ins: The Motor Vehicle Registration Office (MVRO) does not accept walk-ins for initial registrations. Your online forms must be submitted and approved before you can book an appointment.
The Initial Vehicle Registration Process
Please complete these steps in order. Do not submit an initial application until you have received confirmation that your vehicle has physically arrived at Camp Darby.
1. Receive Vehicle Arrival Notification
Wait until you receive an official email from the Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) or Housing/HOG confirming that your Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) or motorcycle has arrived at Camp Darby.
2. Submit Online Form & Documents
Select the appropriate initial registration form (found below) and email the completed application along with your supporting documents to the MVRO email address.
3. Receive Approved Appointment Link
Once the MVRO reviews and approves your digital application, they will email you a private booking link. Use this link to schedule your in-person appointment. Initial registration appointments are conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only.
4. In-Person Appointment Part 1: Get Your Plate Number
Report to the Vehicle Registration Office. Bring the following items: Military ID, SETAF Driver’s License, U.S. Driver's License, Vehicle Title/Registration, Shipping Documents, PCS Orders, $30 USD + €5 (cash is highly recommended), and a POA (if applicable).
The clerk will assign your license plate number and ask what plate size you need. Do not guess. Walk over to the VPC Inspection staff to verify if your vehicle requires a square plate or a standard European rectangular plate. Tip: If your vehicle can physically accommodate it, ask for a rectangular plate to blend in better locally.
5. Secure and Print Your Insurance
Call your auto insurance provider immediately and give them your newly assigned license plate number. They will email you your proof of insurance. You must physically print this document before returning to the office, as there are no public printers available at the VPC.
6. In-Person Appointment Part 2: Finalize and Collect Plates
Return to the Registration Office with your printed proof of insurance. Pay the remaining fees of $75 USD + €5 (cash is best). You will be issued your physical plates and your registration document. Note: Italian law requires you to keep your physical vehicle registration inside the vehicle at all times.
Vehicle Safety Inspections & Renewals
All vehicles, regardless of age, require a physical Vehicle Safety Inspection. This is a entirely separate process from your registration paperwork.
Same-Day Scheduling: If you plan to schedule your safety inspection and your registration appointment on the same day, you must allow at least 2–3 hours between the two time slots to prevent scheduling conflicts.

Application for vehicles privately shipped
Do not submit your application until you have been notified that your vehicle has arrived in Vicenza! Privately shipping your vehicle into Italy can be a challenge and it is recommended that you contact the MVRO as soon as you know the arrival date of your vehicle. If your vehicle’s final Port of Destination is not within the Veneto region, you will have to pay for a shipping company to transport your vehicle from the Port to the MVRO.
Application for Vehicles Purchased from an AFI Member
To properly register a vehicle that you purchased from an AFI Licensed Holder, the vehicle must have a valid registration and be able to pass a Safety Inspection. At the time of signing the registration, both the Buyer and Seller must be present at this appointment.
This is also considered a hybrid registration process, and it is recommended that you contact the MVRO before submitting the forms. If the “Seller” is scheduled to depart Italy in the future, please ensure that you do not wait until the last minute to transfer the vehicle.
The Buyer must submit the application.
Vehicles Purchased from an Authorized US Dealership
Use this Form if you purchased a vehicle from any of the Authorized US Dealerships within Italy. This includes Patriot Military Automobiles and Military AutoSource. If you are unsure if you are purchasing a vehicle from an Authorized Dealership, contact MVRO before you sign any contracts or commit to any financial obligations.
Vehicles Previously Registered from Within Europe
If you are driving your vehicle from within Europe to Italy on PCS Orders, you must make sure that your vehicle has a valid registration from the departing MVRO. If your country of origin does not have a MVRO and you were required to register your vehicle from the local economy, then contact the MVRO before submitting the form.
Vehicle Purchased from an Italian Dealership/Owner
Do NOT exchange money until the Italian dealer has contacted MVRO! There are certain procedures the seller must adhere to or else you will encounter difficulty when trying to register after purchase. Contact MVRO with any questions regarding this process.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who can register a vehicle with MVRO?
All vehicles must be registered in the name of the sponsor with the sponsor’s information. An AFI (SETAF) license is required to register with the MVRO, as well operate any vehicle registered in the MVRO AFI database.
How many vehicles can I register?
The Italian government authorizes each Allied Forces Italy (AFI) registrant (sponsor) a maximum of three vehicles to be registered. A motorcycle greater than 50 cc’s counts as a vehicle.
How do I get my license plate number so I can get insurance?
When you initially register your vehicle using the forms above, the MVRO staff will provide you the plate number so you can obtain insurance prior to your appointment.
How much does it cost to register a vehicle?
- €5 one-time fee per vehicle
- $75 Annual registration fee per vehicle
- Road taxes in euro (€) on secondary vehicles based on engine size – ask MVRO about options to pay quarterly or annually
How often do I need a safety inspection?
A vehicle with model year 4 years or less, obtains an initial inspection at the time it is first registered; then upon reaching 4 years old. It then undergoes another inspection 2 years later (at 6 years old), then annually.
What if my vehicle doesn’t pass the safety inspection?
You can obtain a temporary 30-day registration, this is to allow time to fix the problem. If the vehicle still cannot pass the safety inspection after 30 days, you can request another extension but must provide proof that you are actively working to fix the vehicle (documentation for auto shop work, parts on order, etc.)
I am a spouse, not the sponsor. Can I renew our vehicle registration?
Yes, with a special Power of Attorney from your sponsor.
What do I do if I lost my registration?
Report the lost registration to the SETAF Carabinieri at the PMO at building 113 on Camp Darby. They will issue you a report and you must bring this to the MVRO to obtain a new registration.
I want to sell my registered vehicle but may not have the original title prior to my departure. Do I need that to sell it?
If your vehicle is already registered with MVRO, then you only need the current AFI registration to sell to another AFI member. Refer to the Vehicle Registration Guide for more information on the selling/buying process.
