Getting Around: Public Transportation, Highways, & Traffic Rules
Zona Traffico Limitato (ZTL)
ZTLs are restricted access areas typically marking entrances to old parts of town. Limited traffic areas may be imposed for several reasons including narrow roads, residence access only, and preservation of historical constructions. Unauthorized motorists are identified by camera and issued fines by mail.
Taxis
If you're trying to catch a taxi in town, there are a few areas where they have designated waiting areas (sometimes marked with a "TAXI" sign). The best way to get a taxi anywhere you are is by calling a local taxi company or using any of the taxi mobile apps Italy has to offer.
Buses
SVT is Vicenza's public transportation provider. Tickets may be purchased at several places including bars/cafes and news stands. Rechargeable cards are also available for purchase.
For more details and information, visit https://svt.vi.it/. ⚠
Booking Evening Bus Services
SVT provides an evening bus service within the urban area that you can coordinate through their app "SVT ChiamaBus". Like calling a taxi, you select a pick-up and drop-off point and the app will provide you with routes to choose from. The app then provides directions from your current location to the pick-up point - an icon shows the bus on approach in real time. You can also book recurring rides and save your favorite routes. Ticket purchase is required and can be done at several locations or directly onboard the bus - check with the service for the most updated information.
A call center is also available for book service at +39 0444 22 3113, Monday thru Saturday (excluding holidays) from 0700 to 2000.
Trains
The Italian rail system is and easy and affordable method of transportation. Depending on the train you take, they may require seat assignments (i.e., intercity [IC] trains) or have open seating (i.e., regional trains). Tickets are purchasable from an attendant window, self-service window, or even on any mobile app serving the area.
Autostrade (Highways)
Identified with green signs, autostrade (plural) are toll highways and the primary arteries running through Italy. Motorists pull a ticket from the entry toll booth and return it at the exit toll booth to assess the fee. Exit lanes are marked by method of payment (e.g., Self-Service, Attendant, or Telepass). If you do not have a 'Telepass', do not enter an autostrada without pulling a ticket - even if the gate arm is up - or you may be charged the maximum fee possible.
Telepasses
Telepasses are an optional devices you may acquire for your vehicle. This device is read by sensors as you enter and exit an autostrada and charges a monthly total to your method of payment.
