Antonio Fogazzaro was a great Italian poet and novelist. The Municipality of Montegalda hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to him, featuring the first editions and translations of his major literary works.
The Fogazzaro family spent the grape harvest months in their historic country residence here, starting in the second half of the 19th century, after the unification of Italy. Many places in the area bear traces of the poet and novelist’s presence. His uncle, Luigi, was the first Mayor of Montegalda, and Antonio Fogazzaro himself served as a Senator of the Kingdom and a Municipal Councilor until his death.

La Befana
an old witch who comes to town on January 6th to offer candies to children
Epiphany, a national holiday in Italy celebrated on January 6th, marks the end of the Christmas season and commemorates the presentation of baby Jesus to the Three Wise Men. This day is also associated with the legend of “la Befana”, an old witch who flies on a broomstick. Legend says Befana refused to join the Wise Men on their journey, later regretting her decision. Unable to find baby Jesus, she instead leaves gifts for children, becoming a figure similar to Santa Claus. Italian children hang stockings for Befana on Epiphany Eve, hoping for treats. She rewards well-behaved children with gifts and leaves "coal" (often sweet black candy) for those less well-behaved.
