TAP is a Congressionally mandated program, that is supported by commands. This mandate is according to AR 600-81 Transition Assistance Program.
All Service Members are REQUIRED to complete TAP once they near their end of contract or retirement date.
Service Members eligibility to start TAP is the following:
- Service Members ETSing, once they are 18 months from separating.
- Service Members Retiring, once they are 24 months from their expected retirement date.
- Service Members undergoing a unprogrammed loss (MEB, or Chapter) they are required to start as soon as possible or once their MEB or Chapter process has been initiated.
If a Service Member decides to reenlist, or if a chapter or MEB process was dropped, a Service Member can stop attending TAP classes.
