You should start the Transition Assistance Program 12-18 months prior to separation. If you're planning to retire after 20+ years of service, you can start as early as 24 months out.
To receive the maximum benefit from the program, you should:

- Continuum of Military Service Counseling (active component only)
- 4-6 months out
- Career Tracks
- Capstone (must be done last)
- Army Day
