The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is mandated by the Department of Defense (DoD) and provides information and training to ensure transitioning Service Members, Department of the Army Civilians (DSCs), retirees, veterans, Service Members’ family members, and caregivers are prepared for their next step in life when leaving the Army. This includes whether they want to pursue additional education, find a job, or start their own business.

The Transition Assistance Program helps assist eligible personnel make informed decisions through benefits counseling, career preparation, and employment assistance to provide a successful transition.

No matter if a Service Member is not sure if they are ready to transition out of the military, once they get close to their separation date, they are REQUIRED BY CONGRESS to start the Transition Assistance Program.

TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

TAP is a Congressionally mandated program, that is supported by commands. This mandate is according to AR 600-81 Transition Assistance Program .

All Service Members are REQUIRED to complete TAP once they near their end of contract or retirement date.

Eligibility to Start TAP

  • Service Members ETSing: once they are 18 months from separating.
  • Service Members Retiring: once they are 24 months from their expected retirement date.
  • Service Members undergoing an unprogrammed loss (MEB or Chapter): required to start as soon as possible or once their MEB or Chapter process has been initiated.

If a Service Member decides to reenlist, or if a chapter or MEB process was dropped, a Service Member can stop attending TAP classes.
