Air Quality Alert
A 3-day air quality alert has been issued for the Maryland Piedmont region, including Frederick County, due to smoke from regional forest fires. Due to unhealthy air quality levels in Maryland, Fort Detrick is implementing protective measures for installation access. Effective immediately, all gates are using self-scanning pedestal operations. Please prepare your credentials for automated scanning as you approach the gates.
The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert, indicating that outdoor air pollution levels are currently unhealthy for the general public. To minimize health risks, all personnel are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity and limit physical exercise outside until the alert is lifted.
According to the EPA, the following groups should avoid all outdoor exertion:
• Sensitive groups such as people with heart or lung disease like asthma or emphysema, older adults, and children should avoid long or intense outdoor activities.
Healthy individuals should limit long or intense outdoor activities.
Barquist Army Health Clinic Industrial Hygiene has the following Guidance & Recommendations:
- Stay Indoors: BAHC Industrial Hygiene (IH) recommends staying indoors and avoiding outdoor activities, especially for individuals with underlying respiratory or cardiovascular health conditions.
- Keep Windows Closed: Ensure office and vehicle windows remain closed to maintain indoor air quality.
- Monitor Conditions: Air quality can fluctuate rapidly throughout the day. BAHC IH does not have the capability to monitor these localized conditions in real-time.

Please consult your chain of command or supervisor if your duties require prolonged outdoor exposure during this alert.
